Why should You Ignore Front-of-Package Health Claims?
Food manufacturers frequently use front-of-package health claims, like “low-fat,” “sugar-free,” or “high in fibre,” to draw in customers. Despite their appealing appearance, these claims are frequently deceptive. Here are some reasons why, especially from a halal and health-conscious standpoint, it’s critical to consider more than just these claims when choosing food products.
Halal Status
A product’s ingredients may not always be fully disclosed by front-of-package health claims. A product may be “sugar-free” or “low-fat,” for instance, but it may also contain other dubious ingredients like alcohol or non-halal animal derivatives (like flavourings or gelatine). Although they might not be immediately noticeable on the package’s front, these ingredients are listed in detail.
The Noble Quran encourages us to be mindful of what we consume. Allah Almighty states in the Noble Quran at Surah Al Maaidah (5), Verse 90:
‘O you who are believers, indeed, all forms of intoxication…are all atrocious practices (inspired by) Satan; so avoid them (at all cost), so that you may be successful (in your worldly life).’
Therefore, it’s vital to check the full ingredient list, as front-of-package claims alone may not provide sufficient information on whether a product aligns with halal dietary requirements.
Nutritional Information
Health claims frequently highlight one nutritional component of a product while neglecting other, less healthful elements. For example, a product with a “low-fat” label might still have a lot of sugar, salt, or artificial sweeteners. In a similar vein, if the fibre content comes from processed, low-quality ingredients rather than complete, natural sources, a “high in fibre” claim may be deceptive.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1105, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘O people, Allah is Good and He therefore, accepts only that which is good.’
This Hadith highlights the importance of consuming wholesome and unprocessed food, suggesting we should be cautious about misleading health claims that may not reflect the overall quality or purity of a product.
Ethical Considerations
From an ethical perspective, front-of-package claims can also hide the true impact of a product’s sourcing and production methods. Even though a product claims to be “eco-friendly” or “sustainably sourced,” the true cost to the environment or society may not be immediately apparent. It might not be clear from the packaging whether the ingredients came from ethically run farms or if the workers received fair treatment.
